Niels O. Møller armchairs

This rare pair of armchairs, model 57, was designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chairs feature frames crafted from solid teak, showcasing a warm reddish-brown hue and fine grain pattern. The design is distinguished by soft edges and organic transitions between components, with armrests finely sculpted to flow seamlessly into the rear legs. This continuous form and minimal visible joinery reflect Møller’s signature approach.

The upholstery consists of cognac-toned leather, stretched over well-padded seats and secured along the bottom edge with precise stitching. The slightly domed seat cushions enhance both comfort and the chair’s softened visual profile. The low, curved backrest is formed from a single piece of shaped teak, gently angled backward and tapered at the edges to provide lumbar support while maintaining visual lightness.

Niels Otto Møller (1920–1982) was a Danish designer and trained cabinetmaker, noted for his dedication to craftsmanship and organic modernist aesthetics. He founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944, overseeing both design and production to ensure high-quality hand-finished furniture. Model 57, introduced in the mid-1950s, remains one of his most enduring and celebrated designs, recognized for its understated elegance and comfort. While the model is more commonly seen with woven paper cord seats, this pair is distinguished by its leather upholstery and excellent detailing.

The chairs are in very good condition, showing minor signs of wear consistent with careful use and age. The teak surfaces have developed an even patina and remain structurally sound. The leather upholstery is intact, displaying light creasing and a few small natural marks.

Each chair measures 57.5 centimeters in width, 52 centimeters in depth, and 77 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 45 centimeters (approximately 22.6 x 20.5 x 30.3 inches, seat height 17.7 inches).
