Niels O. Møller armchairs

This set of 4 armchairs, model 56, was designed by Niels Otto Møller and produced by J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s.

The chairs are constructed in solid oak with hand-woven textile seats in a muted, slate blue hue. The oak frames display the light golden tone and pronounced grain typical of Danish oak, with sculptural armrests that curve organically into the upright back legs. The rear legs extend seamlessly into the low, gently curved backrest, creating a continuous and fluid form that is both functional and elegant. The seat is woven in a tight basket-weave pattern using durable blue textile cord, characteristic of Møller’s focus on craftsmanship and natural materials. The design emphasizes clarity of line, structural honesty, and material integrity, all central to the Danish modern ethos. The shaping of the armrests and the tapering legs exemplify the hand-finished detailing and ergonomic refinement for which Møller’s furniture is known.

Niels Otto Møller (1920–1982) founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1944 and was celebrated for his commitment to traditional cabinetmaking techniques. His work consistently balanced craftsmanship and modernist restraint, with many of his chairs becoming icons of mid-century Scandinavian design. Model 56, along with the similar armchair model 55, exemplifies his pursuit of elegant, comfortable seating with minimal ornamentation.

This particular set remains in very good vintage condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. The oak surfaces have developed a warm patina, and the woven seats remain taut and structurally sound.

Each chair measures 57 cm wide, 53 cm deep, and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 43 cm (approximately 22.4 x 20.9 x 30.3 inches, seat height 16.9 inches).
