Information

This inkstand, designed by Nils Fougstedt in 1936 and produced by Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver in Sweden, exemplifies the transitional aesthetic of early Scandinavian modernism, blending neoclassical symmetry with sculptural detail and functional refinement. Crafted in pewter with removable glass liners, the piece reflects both the practical considerations of a writing accessory and the artistic ambitions of its designer.

The structure is based on a rectangular pewter base with stylized bracket feet and a stepped edge profile, which gives the object a formal and elevated presence. At each end of the base sits a cylindrical pewter inkwell with a domed lid and central finial. These symmetrical containers are lined with clear glass inserts, allowing for easy maintenance while preserving the visual cohesion of the pewter exterior. The symmetry and proportion of the layout reinforce the inkstand’s balanced and orderly appearance.

At the center of the composition stands a finely modeled sculptural element in the form of a walking lion, cast in pewter and fixed directly to the base. The lion is rendered with anatomical clarity—muscular and in motion, with a detailed mane and expressive posture. This figure serves as a symbolic and aesthetic focal point, imparting the object with a sense of classical dignity and narrative presence. It draws from earlier traditions of animal symbolism while remaining consistent with the reduced, linear elegance associated with Scandinavian design of the 1930s.

Nils Fougstedt (1881–1954), a sculptor and professor at the College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, was a central figure in Swedish decorative arts during the first half of the 20th century. His work is marked by a balance between traditional craftsmanship and emerging modernist ideals. Fougstedt’s approach often emphasized symbolism and clarity of form, and this inkstand is characteristic of his ability to merge function and sculptural storytelling within a domestic object.

Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver, active during the early 20th century, was known for producing high-quality silver and pewter works, often in collaboration with artists and designers engaged in Sweden’s evolving decorative arts scene. Their production represents a commitment to refined material handling and stylistic innovation.

The inkstand measures 27.5 cm in width, 11 cm in depth, and 6 cm in height (approximately 10.8 x 4.3 x 2.4 inches). It remains in good vintage condition, with minor surface wear and light oxidation to the pewter appropriate to its age. The glass inkwell liners are intact and functional. As an object, it stands at the intersection of symbolic ornament, sculptural expression, and utility—an exemplar of early Swedish modernist decorative art with enduring historical and aesthetic value.
