Nils Fougstedt jar

This rare jar with a lid, designed by Nils Fougstedt and produced by Fabriksaktiebolaget Kronsilver (FAK) in Sweden during the 1940s, stands as a fine example of Swedish modernist design and craftsmanship. The jar is executed in patinated bronze, its cylindrical form marked by minimalist, functional lines that evoke the restrained elegance of the period. The lower portion of the body features finely incised horizontal lines that subtly decorate the surface, adding texture and depth, while similar detailing adorns the exterior wall of the shallow, dish-shaped lid. The lid sits flush with the rim when closed and can also be used independently as a shallow bowl, offering versatility in both function and aesthetic.

The bronze surface is beautifully aged, with natural patina showing rich greenish and brown tones developed through the oxidation process typical of untreated bronze. This patina not only enhances the jar’s visual appeal but also adds a sense of history and character to the piece. The jar is marked on the underside with the FAK crown logo and Nils Fougstedt’s signature, confirming its authenticity and origin.

Nils Fougstedt (1881–1954) was a prominent Swedish sculptor, silversmith, and designer, known for his work within the Swedish Grace and early modernist movements. His designs often combined geometric clarity with organic detailing, and his mastery of materials, especially bronze and precious metals, was evident in pieces like this jar. His work exemplified the Scandinavian approach to functional yet sculptural design, where each piece was not just practical but also visually engaging.

The jar remains in very good vintage condition, showing moderate surface wear and patination consistent with age and the nature of the material. Its clean, geometric form and artisanal precision are undiminished, making it a significant piece in both functional and decorative terms. The jar measures 9 cm in diameter and 11 cm in height (approximately 3.5 inches in diameter and 4.3 inches in height), making it an elegant addition to any collection of mid-century Scandinavian design.
