Nizza cabinet
Rare Nizza cabinet produced by Westbergs Möbler in Tranås, Sweden during the 1950s. This model reflects the refined craftsmanship and material sensitivity characteristic of Swedish mid-century cabinetmaking, combining warm mahogany with woven cane panels and brass fittings.
The cabinet is executed in solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, displaying a deep reddish-brown tone with subtle grain variation. The front is defined by two framed doors with inset woven cane panels, creating a balanced interplay between solid wood and natural fiber. The cane features a tight, regular weave with tonal shifts ranging from honey to light caramel, adding texture and visual depth. The doors are fitted with curved brass handles mounted on circular brass backplates, developing a natural patina that complements the warmth of the wood.
The upper section is finished with a slightly raised gallery edge, forming a discreet tray-like top that enhances both function and silhouette. The cabinet stands on slender square legs connected by stretchers, lifting the body from the floor and giving the piece an elegant, lightweight appearance typical of Scandinavian modern design from the period.
The interior is executed in lighter wood, likely birch, creating a bright contrast to the darker exterior. Inside, the cabinet is fitted with adjustable shelving and shaped internal trays, demonstrating thoughtful functionality and attention to detail. The original lock and key are present, integrated into the clean frontal composition without disturbing the overall symmetry.
Westbergs Möbler of Tranås was known for high-quality production during the mid-20th century, and the Nizza model illustrates the manufacturer’s commitment to refined proportions, material harmony, and practical storage solutions. The combination of mahogany, cane, and brass reflects the 1950s Scandinavian interest in natural materials paired with restrained decorative accents.
The cabinet is in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage and a consistent patina. Minor surface wear and small marks are present, consistent with age, while the cane panels remain intact and well preserved. The brass hardware shows oxidation and tonal variation.
