Oscar Nilsson attrib. cabinet
This very rare cabinet, attributed to Swedish designer Oscar Nilsson and produced in Sweden during the 1940s, is a distinguished example of mid-century Scandinavian furniture that seamlessly integrates neoclassical tradition with functionalist principles.
Crafted from oak and elm, the cabinet showcases a pronounced vertical grain that defines its exterior aesthetic. The doors feature a grid of deeply inset rectangular panels, creating a rhythmic facade that highlights the natural wood figure while referencing Gustavian paneled styles. This blend of historical reference and modern restraint underscores the transitional nature of Swedish design in that era.
Elevated on a tall base, the cabinet emphasizes its verticality through squared legs with chamfered inner edges and a crisply mitred apron that follows the case’s silhouette. The precise joinery and balanced proportions lend the piece a refined architectural presence.
Inside, the cabinet houses multiple shallow drawers made of lighter-toned birch or maple, equipped with dovetail joints for durability and smooth sliding. These trays suggest the cabinet’s original purpose as a collector’s storage or linen press, suited for organizing flat or delicate items.
The condition is very good, preserving the warm golden hues of the oak and the subtle patina acquired over decades of careful use. There are no significant restorations or alterations, maintaining its authenticity and vintage character.
Oscar Nilsson’s work represents an important yet understated strand of Swedish design, bridging classical detail with modern functionality. This cabinet’s bespoke construction and internal fittings suggest it may have been a limited edition or custom piece.
