Otto Schulz attrib. sofa
This is a very rare and large curved sofa attributed to Otto Schulz and produced by Boet in Sweden during the 1930s. The frame is crafted from solid oak and retains its original upholstery in a soft, silver-grey velvet fabric. The sofa features an elegant, crescent-shaped silhouette with a gently curving backrest and subtle roll-armed sides, embodying a refined Art Moderne aesthetic that bridges traditional and modernist influences of the Scandinavian interwar period.
The seat consists of three loose cushions that rest on a fully upholstered platform, supported by six square oak legs in a natural finish. The curvature of the backrest and the flowing line of the base give the piece a dynamic, architectural presence, intended to be appreciated from all angles. The proportions are generous and low, providing both comfort and sculptural volume suited to central placement in a room.
Otto Schulz was a German-born architect and designer who became a pivotal figure in Swedish interior design after founding Boet in Gothenburg in the 1920s. Boet was both a design magazine and a furniture company, and it helped define Swedish decorative art during the interwar years. Schulz’s furniture is known for its bold form, rich materials, and high-quality craftsmanship. This sofa exemplifies his approach, combining traditional elements such as rolled arms and velvet fabric with a modern spatial concept in its sweeping form.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use, including subtle wear to the velvet consistent with age. The upholstery maintains its texture and color, and the oak base is structurally intact with light surface wear. The original fabric’s retention enhances the historical integrity of the object.
The dimensions are 220 cm in width, 110 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 86.6 inches wide, 43.3 inches deep, and 29.1 inches high, with a seat height of 17.7 inches.
