Otto Schulz sofa
This very rare and large curved sofa was designed by the Swedish designer Otto Schulz and produced by Boet in Sweden during the 1930s. The sofa is crafted with a solid oak frame, which ensures stability and durability, and is still upholstered in its original fabric. The fabric features a subtle pattern in a warm beige tone, emphasizing the soft curvature of the piece and enhancing its sculptural presence. The rounded back and continuous flowing lines create an inviting organic form, characteristic of Schulz’s approach to comfort and elegance.
Otto Schulz was a German-born architect and designer who settled in Gothenburg, Sweden, where he founded the interior design company Boet in 1920. Boet quickly gained a reputation as a forward-looking design house, publishing an influential magazine of the same name and producing furniture that combined craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Schulz is recognized for his ability to merge traditional materials with progressive forms, often producing furniture that feels both luxurious and practical.
This sofa reflects the Scandinavian mid-century ethos, though conceived in the early modernist period of the 1930s. Its design emphasizes harmonious proportions, tactile materials, and understated elegance. The curved form not only creates a strong visual impression but also fosters a sense of intimacy and comfort, qualities highly regarded in Scandinavian interior culture.
The piece remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use consistent with its period, including a patina that adds depth and authenticity to its surface. It is a rare example of Otto Schulz’s work with Boet and illustrates the bridge between early 20th-century modernism and the later Scandinavian mid-century movement.
