Otto Schulz easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model Schulz, was designed by Otto Schulz and produced by Boet in Sweden in 1936. The chairs exemplify Schulz’s refined craftsmanship and luxurious aesthetic, showcasing a structure crafted from stained beech. This choice of wood combines durability with a warm appearance that complements the original velvet upholstery.
Each chair features a generously padded seat and a curved, tufted backrest that envelops the sitter, forming integrated armrests. The deep button tufting adds both comfort and visual richness, creating a plush, sculptural surface that balances softness with structural elegance. The legs are slightly tapered and elegantly curved, offering a delicate contrast to the voluminous upper sections and emphasizing a harmony between solidity and refinement.
Otto Schulz, a German-Swedish designer and architect, was influential in Scandinavian modernism, known for blending functionality with decorative richness. As founder of Boet, a leading Swedish design company of the early 20th century, Schulz contributed significantly to the modernist movement in Swedish furniture design, incorporating intricate detailing and premium materials.
The upholstery remains in its original velvet fabric, showing a patina that enhances its historical authenticity. Brass nailhead trim along the edges adds a subtle decorative accent, underscoring the artisanal craftsmanship integral to Schulz’s work.
The chairs measure 85 centimeters in width (33.5 inches), 73 centimeters in depth (28.7 inches), and 75 centimeters in height (29.5 inches), with a seat height of 45 centimeters (17.7 inches).
