Information

This rare floor lamp, model 9608, was designed by the Finnish lighting designer Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy around 1945. The lamp is executed in brass with a wrapped leather detail on the upper section of the stem. Its design is characterized by a gently curved brass tube leading up to a hemispherical shade. The shade features the small perforations and cut-out detailing typical of Tynell’s work of the 1940s, creating a distinctive decorative light pattern when illuminated.

The lamp is constructed in solid brass, giving it a warm, matte surface with natural patination consistent with age. The base is a flat, circular brass disc with a soft, concave rise at the stem connection. A rotary switch is integrated beneath the shade, mounted on the internal shade bracket. The leather wrapping on the stem appears original or period-appropriate, showing age and wear consistent with vintage condition. The lamp has been restored and rewired while preserving its original components and surface character. Overall condition is good, with age-related marks, small dents, and patina visible throughout the brass surfaces.

Paavo Tynell was one of Finland’s most important lighting designers and a co-founder of Taito Oy, the primary manufacturer of his designs in the first half of the twentieth century. During the 1930s and 1940s, Tynell developed a signature aesthetic involving perforated brass, hand-crafted metalwork, and soft, indirect light. Model 9608 is an example from this period, combining functional simplicity with characteristic decorative detailing. Taito Oy, active from the 1920s onward, was known for its high-quality metalwork and close collaboration with leading Finnish designers.

The shade measures 28 cm in diameter, corresponding to approximately 11.0 inches. The base measures 24 cm in diameter, or about 9.4 inches. The total height of the lamp is 134 cm, equivalent to approximately 52.8 inches.
