Paavo Tynell table lamp
This very rare and early table lamp, model 9224, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito in Finland during the 1950s. Constructed primarily from brass, the lamp features a distinctive horseshoe-shaped base that offers both stability and a visually open, lightweight presence. The vertical stem is wrapped in leather, providing a tactile contrast and warmth to the metal structure. Its conical shade is punctuated by perforations along the lower rim, a signature element of Tynell’s work that produces a delicate interplay of light and shadow.
The brass components display a natural patina that speaks to the lamp’s vintage authenticity, while the leather wrapping shows signs of age-related wear, further emphasizing its historical character. The adjustable shade is mounted on a pivoting joint, allowing for directional lighting that is both functional and elegant.
Paavo Tynell, co-founder of Taito Oy, was a pioneering figure in Scandinavian modern lighting design. He was celebrated for his refined material choices and intricate perforated metalwork, blending traditional craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. His use of brass, rattan, and leather helped define the warm, functional lighting style that became synonymous with Finnish mid-century design. Today, Tynell’s lamps remain highly regarded and sought after by collectors worldwide.
The lamp measures approximately 16.5 cm in width, 29 cm in depth, and 53 cm in height (6.5 x 11.4 x 20.9 inches). Its condition reflects a well-preserved vintage piece, with patinated brass and worn leather consistent with its age and use.
