Paavo Tynell table lamp
This table lamp, model 5061, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. It represents one of Tynell’s refined explorations of material contrast and functional light diffusion, characteristic of his postwar designs. The lamp combines brass and glass in a balanced composition that emphasizes both warmth and precision, typical of Finnish modern lighting from the mid-century period.
The lamp features a circular brass base with a gently tapering stem leading to a wide, dome-shaped shade. The upper section of the shade is made of hand-brushed brass with visible surface texture, while the lower section consists of a pale yellow enameled glass diffuser. This combination allows the lamp to cast both downward and ambient light, creating a soft, even illumination. The underside reveals the internal brass armature with dual bulb fittings, demonstrating the designer’s focus on light distribution and technical clarity. The lamp’s geometry—circular, conical, and disc-like forms—contributes to its architectural presence and balanced proportion.
The brass surfaces exhibit an even, natural patina consistent with age and use, while the glass component remains in good condition with minimal wear. The finish has developed subtle tonal variation over time, enhancing the depth and authenticity of the piece. The electrical components have been maintained, and the lamp remains functional with standard fittings for modern use.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers, often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland”. Trained as a metalworker, Tynell co-founded Taito Oy in 1918, which became Finland’s leading lighting manufacturer. His designs are distinguished by a delicate interplay between metal craftsmanship and organic form, merging industrial technique with artistic expression. The 1950s marked a mature phase in his work, characterized by an emphasis on brass, perforated detailing, and harmonious proportions.
Taito Oy, active from the early 20th century through the mid-1960s, collaborated closely with many leading Finnish architects and designers. The company’s production of Tynell’s lamps exemplified the height of Finnish decorative lighting design, bridging craft tradition with modernist aesthetics.
The lamp measures 41 cm in height (16.1 inches) and 40 cm in diameter (15.7 inches). It remains in good vintage condition with signs of use and an aged brass patina that attest to its authenticity and period origin.
