Paavo Tynell table lamp

This table lamp, model 5321, often referred to as the “Shell” lamp, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The model is a well-documented example of Tynell’s sculptural approach to lighting design, where functional illumination is combined with refined material treatment and organic form.

The lamp is constructed primarily of brass, featuring a ribbed, shell-shaped shade with a softly domed profile. The shade’s fluted surface creates a nuanced play of light and shadow when illuminated, while also emphasizing the tactile quality of the metal. The vertical stem is wrapped in cane, introducing a warm, natural contrast to the brass and adding both visual texture and a subtle grip-like character.
