Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen coffee table
This very rare coffee table was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1957. The table is crafted from solid rosewood, showcasing a rich and expressive grain pattern that highlights the natural beauty of the material. Its design reflects Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen’s signature approach — combining refined joinery with functional elegance. The tabletop features softly rounded corners and a floating appearance, supported by a precise and minimal frame construction.
The table has been completely restored, bringing out the depth and warmth of the rosewood while preserving its mid-century character. The frame remains solid and structurally sound, and the surface shows only minor signs of wear consistent with its age and careful restoration.
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were among the leading figures of Danish modern design, known for their innovative use of materials and ability to create furniture that was both practical and visually striking. Their work with France & Son resulted in some of the most iconic pieces of Scandinavian design, many of which remain highly sought after by collectors.
This table measures 147.5 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, and 50 cm in height (58.1 x 23.6 x 19.7 inches). It is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining craftsmanship, simplicity, and timeless appeal.
