Information

This rare freestanding desk was designed by Peter Løvig Nielsen and produced by Hedensted Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies Scandinavian modern design through its refined craftsmanship, functional elegance, and careful attention to materiality and construction. It features clean lines and a sculptural form, typical of the period’s aesthetic values.

The desk is crafted from rosewood, a material prized for its rich, dark grain and natural durability. The wood has been expertly finished to enhance its deep, warm tones, bringing out the complexity of the grain patterns. The desktop has a subtly asymmetric shape with softly rounded edges, contributing to a fluid, sculptural quality. A raised lip runs along the perimeter, providing both practical containment for objects and a distinctive design detail. The desk stands on an angular leg structure, incorporating brass struts that provide both stability and a contrasting visual element. The tapered legs rest within an open rectangular base, emphasizing lightness and geometric precision.

On one side, the desk features a floating storage unit with three drawers, each fitted with recessed handles that align smoothly with the wood grain, maintaining the piece’s streamlined appearance. The rear includes an open storage section and a lockable compartment featuring a patterned mirrored glass back panel, combining utility with decorative sophistication.

Peter Løvig Nielsen was a Danish designer known for integrating form and function, utilizing fine materials and precise joinery. His collaborations with Hedensted Møbelfabrik resulted in furniture pieces renowned for their timeless design and high-quality craftsmanship.

This desk is in excellent vintage condition, with well-preserved rosewood surfaces and brass details exhibiting a patina consistent with age, which adds to its character. The dimensions are approximately 149 cm wide, 88 cm deep, and 72 cm high, or 58.7 inches wide, 34.6 inches deep, and 28.3 inches high.
