Pierre Forssell candlestick
This candlestick, model Variabel, was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. It features a cylindrical brass structure incorporating a rotating mechanism that enables the candle holder to pivot outward when in use and retract when not needed. A ball-shaped counterweight balances the movement, allowing smooth and controlled adjustment. The brass surface has aged to develop a natural patina, enriching the piece with depth and visual texture.
Pierre Forssell was a Swedish industrial designer noted for his minimalist yet refined aesthetic. His designs often fused functionality with clear geometric forms, resulting in objects that are both practical and visually compelling. Forssell’s collaboration with Skultuna produced a number of elegant household items that exemplify mid-century Swedish design.
Skultuna, founded in 1607, is a historic Swedish manufacturer renowned for its high-quality brasswork. The company played a significant role in the production of modernist brass designs during the mid-20th century, partnering with prominent designers like Forssell to create pieces with lasting appeal.
The candlestick remains in well-preserved condition, exhibiting signs of oxidation and wear consistent with its age. Its rotating mechanism functions smoothly, allowing easy adjustment of the candle holder.
The dimensions are 4 cm in width, 9 cm in depth, and 17 cm in height (1.6 x 3.5 x 6.7 inches), combining functional innovation with elegant form.
