Information

This rare hanging lantern was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. Crafted entirely from brass, the lantern exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship through its sculptural form and tactile surface treatment.

The lantern features a vertically elongated hexagonal body topped with a pyramidal cap and suspended from a substantial circular hanging ring attached by a chain. Its cast brass body is perforated with a dense honeycomb-like lattice of small circular openings on all sides. The patinated surface displays rich tonal variations of bronze, green, and oxidized gold, with visible verdigris and natural weathering that deepen the material’s character. The interior houses a removable base insert secured by two lateral brass rods, designed to accommodate a small light source.

The condition is original and consistent with the lantern’s age, showing oxidation, surface encrustation, and patina typical of untreated brass from the period. The structure and functional components remain intact.

Pierre Forssell (1925–2004), a Swedish designer and silversmith, served as artistic director of Skultuna Messingsbruk from 1955 to 1986. Renowned for his disciplined functionalist aesthetic, Forssell introduced a modernist language to Skultuna’s brasswork tradition, combining precision with a subtle tactile quality that bridges utility and sculptural form.

Skultuna Messingsbruk, founded in 1607 by King Karl IX, is one of Sweden’s oldest continuously operating manufacturers. Under Forssell’s direction in the mid-20th century, the company became known for elevating everyday brass objects into collectible design pieces through collaborations with leading designers.

This lantern reflects Forssell’s interest in geometric minimalism, refined ornamentation, and the expressive potential of patinated metal surfaces.

The lantern measures 7 cm wide, 7 cm deep, and 35 cm in height, with a total drop height including the chain of 102 cm, approximately 2.8 x 2.8 x 13.8 inches, with a total height of 40.2 inches.
