Pierre Forssell vase
This rare brass vase, designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden, exemplifies the designer’s modernist aesthetic and mastery of metalwork. The vase features a minimalist yet refined structure composed entirely of brass, distinguished by its clear geometric composition and subtle detailing. The form consists of a short cylindrical base that supports a wide, shallow, concave disc with a precisely perforated surface.
The upper dish-like element is patterned with a regular grid of small perforations, contributing both a visual lightness and a decorative rhythm to the otherwise monolithic brass form. This openwork design allows for a play of light and shadow across the surface, enhancing the object’s sculptural presence. The combination of the solid base and the airy top creates a dynamic contrast between mass and void.
The brass has developed a natural patina, with areas of discoloration and oxidation typical for aged brass. These surface variations lend the piece authenticity and historical depth, emphasizing its mid-20th-century origin. The finish is matte with a warm golden hue, and signs of wear are consistent with careful handling over time.
The vase is in good vintage condition, structurally sound and retaining its original proportions and detailing. Its restrained palette and architectural form align with Pierre Forssell’s design language, which consistently balanced decorative refinement with functional clarity.
