Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
The lamp consists of a gently curved metal shade with a muted red exterior and a warm, reflective underside. Beneath the shade, a series of carefully arranged opaline glass elements forms the characteristic PH lighting system, designed to distribute light evenly while minimizing direct glare. The layered glass construction creates a soft, diffused illumination, while the underside of the metal shade reflects a warm ambient glow.
The upper assembly features a cylindrical nickel-plated metal fitting with visible mechanical details, suspended from a twisted textile cord and matching ceiling canopy. The combination of industrial metal components, delicate glass elements, and the restrained red finish gives the lamp a distinctive architectural character.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish architect, designer, and writer, internationally recognized for his innovative contributions to modern lighting. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and led to the development of the celebrated PH lighting system. Based on careful studies of light reflection and the relationship between the light source and surrounding surfaces, his designs sought to create comfortable, glare-free illumination. His work became fundamental to the development of Danish modern lighting and remains highly influential today.
Louis Poulsen, established in Copenhagen in 1874, became one of Denmark’s leading lighting manufacturers through its collaborations with influential designers and architects. The company’s longstanding partnership with Poul Henningsen resulted in some of the most recognizable lighting designs of the twentieth century, combining technical innovation with refined Scandinavian craftsmanship.
This early example retains its characteristic construction and period metal fittings. The internal mounting plate is stamped “PATENTED” reflecting the patented lighting construction associated with Henningsen’s designs.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, with visible signs of age and use. The red-lacquered metal shade shows minor surface wear and small losses along the edges, while the nickel-plated components display a natural patina and areas of oxidation. The underside of the shade has surface marks and discoloration consistent with age. The opaline glass elements appear well preserved, and the lamp retains its distinctive original character.
