Poul Henningsen floor lamp
This exceptionally rare floor lamp, model PH-2/2 “Water Pump” was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1930s. It represents one of Henningsen’s early and most iconic experiments in glare-free light diffusion, developed through his pioneering three-shade system that directs and softens illumination. The lamp’s mechanical design, with its pivoting arm and counterbalanced structure, earned it the nickname “Water Pump” for its distinctive, functional silhouette reminiscent of an industrial lever mechanism.
The lamp is constructed of browned brass, with an original lacquered metal shade in a warm yellow tone and internal reflectors in white. The opaline glass diffuser contributes to the even, atmospheric light characteristic of Henningsen’s designs. The structural elements exhibit the fine industrial detailing of the early Louis Poulsen production, combining precision engineering with modernist aesthetics.
This piece remains in excellent vintage condition with visible traces of use consistent with age. The patina of the brass and subtle wear to the shade emphasize its authenticity and historical character, while the lamp has been carefully preserved to maintain its original finish.
Poul Henningsen’s work for Louis Poulsen defined Scandinavian lighting design in the 20th century, merging technical innovation with visual comfort. The PH-2/2 “Water Pump” model is particularly sought after for its rarity and early production period, marking a significant chapter in the evolution of functional modern lighting.
