Poul Henningsen floor lamp
This very rare floor lamp, model “The Question Mark” was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1940s. Its distinctive feature is a gracefully curved brass stem, whose shape resembles a question mark, lending the lamp its evocative name. The structure is crafted from bronze-patinated brass, presenting a subtle aged finish that enhances its vintage character. The lamp rests on a circular, weighted base that provides stability, with the surface showing natural patina and wear consistent with its age.
The lamp is fitted with its original multi-tiered glass shade system, a hallmark of Poul Henningsen’s lighting designs. This shade comprises three overlapping frosted glass elements arranged to provide soft, diffused, and glare-free illumination. The uppermost shade is wide and shallow, directing light downward, while the smaller inner shades contribute to an even distribution of light.
Poul Henningsen is recognized as one of the most influential lighting designers of the 20th century, noted for his scientific approach to light diffusion and his longstanding collaboration with Louis Poulsen. His designs emphasize soft, indirect lighting, a defining characteristic of Scandinavian modernism.
Louis Poulsen, founded in 1874, is a distinguished Danish lighting manufacturer known for producing some of the most iconic modern design lamps. Their collaboration with Henningsen produced groundbreaking lighting solutions that blend aesthetics with functional innovation.
This lamp exemplifies Danish Modernism through its organic form, use of high-quality materials, and optimized light distribution. Its sculptural silhouette and refined details make it a notable example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing visible patina on the brass that adds to its authenticity and character. The glass shades are well preserved, exhibiting minor wear consistent with their age. The lamp measures 28 cm in width, 32 cm in depth, and 152 cm in height (approximately 11 by 12.6 by 59.8 inches).
