Poul Kjærholm dining chairs
This rare set of six PK-9 dining chairs was designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark around 1961. Kjærholm, one of the leading figures in Danish modernism, was known for his rigorous approach to form, materials, and construction. His designs often merged industrial precision with an elegant sculptural sensibility, making them timeless examples of Scandinavian modern design.
The PK-9, sometimes referred to as the “Tulip Chair” due to its graceful organic shape, is one of Kjærholm’s most celebrated seating designs. It features a distinctive tripod base crafted from flat steel, a material Kjærholm frequently used to contrast the warmth of natural leather and to emphasize the structure of the piece. The chair’s seat shell, covered in original cognac brown leather, is molded to follow the contours of the human body, providing both ergonomic comfort and a visually fluid silhouette. Over time, the leather has developed a rich patina that highlights the natural aging of the material, adding depth and character. One of the chairs shows damage to the leather, which reflects its authentic vintage condition and use over decades.
The PK-9 embodies the essence of mid-century Scandinavian furniture: a balance of minimalist form, meticulous craftsmanship, and honest use of materials. Its refined yet industrial aesthetic makes it suitable for both modern and classic interiors, while its sculptural profile allows it to function as both a functional chair and a design object.
