Poul Kjærholm dining chairs
This rare set of eight dining chairs, model PK-9, was designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark around 1961. The chairs feature Kjærholm’s characteristic combination of industrial precision and refined craftsmanship, merging sculptural form with material honesty.
Each chair consists of a tripod base crafted from flat brushed steel, supporting a molded shell upholstered in original cognac brown leather. The steel structure is minimal yet remarkably stable, emphasizing Kjærholm’s fascination with the structural beauty of metal. The seat shell, with its flowing organic contours, offers exceptional comfort while maintaining a distinctly architectural silhouette. The subtle curvature and hand-stitched detailing of the leather upholstery reflect the precision and tactile sophistication of Danish mid-century furniture making.
The PK-9, sometimes referred to as the “Tulip Chair” demonstrates Kjærholm’s mastery of proportion and material contrast — the cool, industrial steel elegantly counterbalanced by the warmth and softness of the natural leather. Over time, the cognac leather has developed a rich, even patina, enhancing the visual depth and authenticity of each piece.
This set remains in excellent vintage condition, with light signs of use consistent with age and original materials. The patina of the leather adds both historical integrity and character to the ensemble.
