Severin Hansen bedside tables
This is a rare freestanding bedside or side table designed by Severin Hansen and produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri in Denmark during the 1950s. The table is crafted from solid teak with a rich, warm brown tone and finely grained texture. The tabletop features clean, sharp edges and precise mitered corner joints, a signature detail of Hansen’s work that emphasizes craftsmanship and geometrical clarity. Below the tabletop, a woven cane shelf in a warm honey color provides additional storage space and visual lightness, introducing a natural contrast to the wood’s denser appearance.
The form of the table is simple yet sophisticated, adhering to the functionalist ideals of mid-century Scandinavian design. The rectangular top sits on tapering, square-section legs, which convey a sense of lightness and structural refinement. A single drawer is seamlessly integrated beneath the tabletop, designed without handles to maintain the table’s sleek and uninterrupted lines. The combination of clean planes, finely executed joinery, and contrasting materials creates a piece that is both functional and sculptural.
This example is in good vintage condition, showing minor signs of use consistent with its age. The teak surfaces have developed a soft patina, with some small surface marks and variations in tone that add character without detracting from the table’s clean aesthetic. The woven cane shelf remains well-preserved, showing minimal wear and retaining its structural integrity.
