Information

This pair of side tables exemplifies the precision and restraint characteristic of Danish modernism in the 1950s. Each table is crafted in rosewood, a material prized for its visual depth and dramatic grain structure. The coloration ranges from reddish-brown to deep, almost black streaks, lending the surfaces a sense of richness and natural movement. The tables have been carefully restored and remain in excellent condition, with their surface and joinery exhibiting a high standard of preservation and finish.

The form is composed of a square top supported by sharply tapered legs, all joined with meticulous miter joints at each corner. This geometric clarity, combined with the rich wood grain, creates a strong architectural presence despite the tables’ compact scale. The absence of decorative flourishes aligns the design with minimalist ideals, where proportion, material, and construction take priority.

The tables were designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Severin Hansen Jr., known for his exacting attention to detail and for refining the practice of mitered joinery in modern furniture. His works from the 1950s often embody a structural clarity and an appreciation for the expressive qualities of natural wood. Hansen’s tables remain some of the most recognizable and collectible examples of Danish postwar cabinetmaking.

Produced by Haslev Møbelsnedkeri, a cabinetmaker based in Haslev, Denmark, these pieces were made under the Danish Furnituremakers Control, a mark of quality and authenticity. Haslev Møbelsnedkeri was an important producer in the Danish modern movement, collaborating with several leading designers and maintaining rigorous production standards. The control label visible on the underside of each table confirms their origin and level of craftsmanship.

These tables represent the fusion of Danish modernism with minimalist design values, emphasizing the beauty of pure form and material honesty. As restored vintage pieces, they hold both functional and historical value.
