Information

Rare ceramic vase designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden during the 1960s. This highly decorative piece exemplifies Lindberg’s experimental and imaginative approach to ceramic design, combining sculptural form with a richly textured surface treatment that reflects the artistic freedom of Swedish studio ceramics during the post-war period.

The vase features a rounded, almost spherical body crowned by a wide, shallow trumpet-shaped neck. Its surface is adorned with a meticulously repeated relief pattern of elongated teardrop motifs, carved into the clay and accentuated by the glaze. The decoration creates a rhythmic texture across the vessel, lending depth and movement to the otherwise restrained silhouette. The pattern demonstrates Lindberg’s mastery of integrating ornament and form into a harmonious whole.

Finished in a nuanced green glaze with subtle variations ranging from deep moss and olive tones to lighter celadon hues, the vase possesses a soft, velvety appearance. The recessed decoration reveals lighter edges that emphasize the relief work and create a striking contrast against the darker ground. The glaze exhibits the organic tonal shifts and depth that are characteristic of Gustavsberg’s finest artistic productions of the period.

Stig Lindberg remains one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Scandinavian design. Alongside his celebrated tableware, textiles, and industrial designs, his artistic ceramics are particularly sought after for their inventive forms, experimental glazes, and distinctive decorative vocabulary. This vase is an excellent example of his more sculptural ceramic work, where craftsmanship and artistic expression merge into a highly collectible object.

The underside bears the incised Gustavsberg studio mark together with Lindberg’s signature, confirming its authenticity and production at Gustavsberg. The vase remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation.
