Information

This large and highly refined vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden between 1958 and 1959. It exemplifies the artist’s fusion of decorative intricacy with sculptural clarity, executed at a scale that emphasizes both technical skill and visual impact.

The vase is nearly spherical with a slightly compressed profile and a narrow, short neck. It is decorated throughout with a densely repeated pattern of incised, drop-shaped impressions arranged in orderly horizontal bands. These impressions create a rhythmic surface structure, both tactile and visual, enhanced by the deep green and black glaze that pools in the recesses and highlights the relief pattern. The glaze treatment reveals subtle transitions from emerald green to darker olive and almost black, contributing to a sense of depth and movement across the surface.

Stig Lindberg (1916–1982) was one of Sweden’s most influential designers, known for his work in ceramics, textiles, and industrial design. At Gustavsberg, where he worked from the 1940s to the 1970s, he developed a wide array of artistic and utilitarian objects that combined modernist experimentation with whimsical and organic motifs. His decorative stoneware pieces from the 1950s, such as this one, are regarded among the most refined examples of postwar Scandinavian ceramics.

Gustavsberg, one of Sweden’s oldest and most renowned porcelain manufacturers, served as the platform for Lindberg’s expressive and innovative ceramic designs. Their collaboration elevated the studio’s artistic reputation on an international level, with exhibitions and collectors recognizing Gustavsberg’s production as synonymous with mid-century Swedish excellence.

This piece is in excellent condition, with no visible signs of restoration or glaze loss, retaining its full original surface and structure.
