Information

This tall sculptural vase was designed by Stig Lindberg and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden in 1961. It features an elongated trumpet form with a flaring mouth, rising from a narrow conical base. The surface is articulated with a highly textured, rhythmic grid pattern, adding dimensionality to the vertical silhouette. The vase culminates in a shallow, funnel-like top, creating a compelling interplay between linear structure and open curvature.

The glaze is a glossy blend of turquoise, sky blue, and earth tones, with the mottled texture of the surface allowing the underlying ceramic body to emerge in warm brown hues. Inside the funnel, the glaze deepens to saturated teal and indigo tones with a speckled crystalline appearance. The tactile quality of the patterned glaze adds depth and light reflection, enhancing the sculptural effect of the form.

Stig Lindberg was one of the most prolific and versatile figures in 20th-century Swedish design. Active in ceramics, illustration, textile design, and industrial arts, he played a defining role at Gustavsberg from the 1940s through the 1970s. His ceramic works range from whimsical to highly refined studio pieces such as this, where formal experimentation and glaze innovation merge seamlessly. Gustavsberg’s artistic department under Lindberg became a hub for post-war Scandinavian modernism, pushing boundaries in both decorative and utilitarian ceramics.

This piece bears the incised Gustavsberg studio mark along with Lindberg’s signature and date, confirming its origin. It remains in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restoration, and retains the original glaze and fine detailing.

The vase stands 32 cm tall with a diameter of 9 cm, which corresponds to approximately 12.6 inches in height and 3.5 inches in diameter. It represents a rare and expressive example of Lindberg’s studio ceramics, exemplifying both the technical finesse and artistic individuality of his mature period at Gustavsberg.
