Sven Engström & Gunnar Myrstrand side tables
This pair of tables, model Casino, was designed by Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand and produced by Tingströms in Sweden during the 1960s. Executed in rosewood with brass details and textile seating, the design exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and functional elegance that characterized Swedish mid-century furniture.
The composition is asymmetrical, combining a low table surface with a raised storage section featuring drawers or open compartments, and an upholstered seat. The rosewood is richly figured, displaying vibrant grain patterns and a deep, natural luster that complements the warm tone of the brass handles. The frame is delicately constructed yet sturdy, with square legs joined by horizontal stretchers that provide both visual balance and stability.
Engström and Myrstrand were known for their precise and architectural approach to furniture design, often merging geometric clarity with human comfort. The Casino series reflects this philosophy through its modular layout and material harmony, serving as both a functional and decorative piece in a domestic setting. The tables were produced by Tingströms, a Swedish manufacturer noted for its high-quality cabinetmaking and its collaborations with leading Scandinavian designers of the period.
Both pieces remain in excellent vintage condition with small, consistent signs of use. The rosewood surfaces retain a fine, even patina, and the brass details have aged naturally, adding depth to the overall aesthetic.
