Sven Engström & Gunnar Myrstrand bedside tables
This pair of bedside or side tables, model Casino, was designed by Swedish designers Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand and produced by Tingströms in Sweden. Created during the peak of Scandinavian modernism, these tables are exemplary of the movement’s core principles: a dedication to functional clarity, an emphasis on natural materials, and a commitment to restrained elegance.
Constructed from richly grained rosewood, the tables exhibit deep, saturated tones ranging from warm browns to darker, almost black streaks, forming bold organic patterns across the surfaces. The finish is clear and smooth, enhancing the visual depth of the wood grain while maintaining a natural, tactile surface quality. The understated decorative detailing allows the material itself to take visual precedence.
The form is compact and geometric, defined by a clean rectangular body housing a single drawer, fronted with a small, precisely machined brass handle. These brass elements, modest yet refined, add a warm metallic accent that harmonizes with the wood’s darker hues. A subtle patina on the handles further contributes to the tables’ vintage character.
Each table stands on four slim cylindrical wooden legs, connected by horizontal stretchers on all sides. This base construction not only provides structural stability but also contributes to an elevated, lightweight visual impression. The combination of slender supports and solid cabinet volumes creates a balanced composition characteristic of modernist furniture design.
Sven Engström and Gunnar Myrstrand were prominent figures in Swedish mid-century furniture design. Known for their collaborations throughout the 1950s and 1960s, their work often centered on the thoughtful merging of artisanal craftsmanship with industrial production techniques. The Casino model is a strong example of this synthesis, reflecting both the designers’ minimalist approach and the high manufacturing standards of Tingströms.
The tables are in excellent vintage condition, with the rosewood surfaces retaining their luster and depth. Minor signs of age—such as fine scratches and patinated brass—are present but do not detract from the overall visual quality or structural integrity.
Each table measures 50 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 59 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 19.7 inches wide, 17.7 inches deep, and 23.2 inches high.
