Biography
Sven Olof Fredrik Engström, later Lilliestråle, was born on July 24, 1922, in Klosters parish, Eskilstuna, Sweden. In the late 1940s he established an interior design and furniture practice together with Gunnar Myrstrand. Their collaboration became closely connected to the development of modern Swedish furniture production during the postwar decades.
Engström and Myrstrand were involved in the Bra Bohag initiative, which aimed to promote well-designed, functional furniture for Swedish homes. In 1952 they designed the furniture series Ideal for Skaraborgs Möbelfabrik, followed by additional models including Expo and, in 1961, the Skandinett series for Svenska Möbelfabrikerna. These designs reflected the broader movement toward standardized production and accessible modern furniture in Sweden.
Sven Engström’s work represents a practical and production-oriented approach to Swedish modern design. His furniture remains associated with the functional ideals that defined Swedish interiors during the mid-20th century, characterized by durability, clarity of form, and suitability for everyday use.
