Svend Aage Holm Sørensen attrib. floor lamp
This is a rare Danish floor lamp attributed to Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced by Holm Sørensen & Co during the 1950s. The structure is defined by its minimalist, sculptural form, composed of a black lacquered metal tubular frame bent into a continuous line forming both the upright support and integrated footrest base. The frame has a matte black finish, showing minor surface wear and chipping consistent with age and use.
The lamp is fitted with a flared conical shade made of brass, which exhibits a rich aged patina with oxidation, giving the surface a dark bronze tone. The shade features perforated circular openings along the top and lower rim. These perforations not only reduce heat accumulation but also provide a distinctive lighting effect when the lamp is in use, producing a dotted halo of light around the scalloped lower edge. The shade is mounted on a pivot joint allowing for directional adjustment.
The condition of the lamp is good, retaining its original components and finishes. The brass shows oxidation typical of mid-century lighting in original state, and the lacquered frame presents only minor abrasions. The lamp has been rewired for contemporary use.
Svend Aage Holm Sørensen was a Danish lighting designer known for his innovative and often sculptural approach to light and form, with a focus on materials like perforated brass and lacquered steel. His designs for Holm Sørensen & Co are noted for their expressive yet restrained functionalism.
The lamp measures 11 cm in depth, 50 cm in width, and 124 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 4.33 inches deep, 19.69 inches wide, and 48.82 inches high.
