Information

This very rare floor lamp was designed by Danish lighting designer Svend Aage Holm Sørensen and produced during the 1950s by ASEA in Sweden, a company known for its collaboration with prominent Scandinavian designers and its production of high-quality lighting fixtures. The lamp exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design with a focus on material contrast, functional adaptability, and sculptural form.

The structure is composed of a black lacquered metal base and stem, which provides visual grounding and a clean, modern profile. Brass detailing is used at junctions and fittings, lending the lamp a refined and elegant appearance through the warm contrast between the matte black and the metallic highlights. A key tactile feature of the design is the leather-wrapped grip at the central stem, which introduces both material richness and ergonomic functionality.

This floor lamp is equipped with two distinct light sources: an upward-facing fixed shade that emits indirect ambient light, creating a soft, atmospheric glow on surrounding surfaces; and a cone-shaped, directional shade mounted on an adjustable arm. The adjustable shade allows the user to position the light for focused tasks such as reading or accent illumination, offering a dual-purpose solution within a minimal footprint.

Svend Aage Holm Sørensen (1913–2004) was an influential figure in mid-century Danish lighting design. Known for his experimental forms and innovative use of materials, his work often combined sculptural expression with practical utility. Though he operated his own workshop, he also collaborated with several Scandinavian manufacturers, including ASEA, on limited production runs that are now considered highly collectible.

The condition of the lamp is very good, with minor signs of age-appropriate wear. The brass elements show a light patina, and the leather grip retains its form and texture with only subtle surface wear. These features contribute to the lamp’s authenticity and underscore its mid-century origin.

The dimensions of the lamp are 60 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 179 cm in height. In imperial measurements, this translates to approximately 23.6 inches wide, 11.8 inches deep, and 70.5 inches high.
