Svend Aage Holm Sørensen attrib. table lamp

This rare table lamp is attributed to Danish designer Svend Aage Holm-Sørensen and was produced by Boréns in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies the expressive and sculptural lighting design characteristic of Scandinavian mid-century aesthetics, combining black lacquered metal with polished brass components.

The design features a biomorphic, UFO-like upper reflector in black-painted metal with a cream-colored underside, angled above a conical brass light source. The reflector includes a ring of perforations that provide ventilation and contribute to decorative light diffusion when illuminated. The brass conical shade directs light upward, creating indirect illumination softened by the dome-shaped diffuser. The stem incorporates a black-lacquered grip element—either wood or metal—that visually separates the brass parts and enhances the lamp’s distinctive profile. The switch is located on the circular brass base for easy access.

This interplay of curved and angular forms, contrasting dark and polished finishes, and thoughtful light manipulation aligns with Holm-Sørensen’s known design approach, though the attribution remains unconfirmed by signature. Boréns, active during the mid-20th century, was a respected Swedish lighting manufacturer noted for collaborations with Nordic designers in the postwar period.

The lamp is in very good condition, showing expected patina on the brass and minor wear on the lacquered surfaces. It retains original components, including surface finishes and wiring.

Measuring 37 centimeters wide, 31 centimeters deep, and 47 centimeters high (approximately 14.6 x 12.2 x 18.5 inches), this piece is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design blending form, function, and material contrast.
