Svend Langkilde bookcase
This rare freestanding bookcase and room divider was designed by Danish cabinetmaker Svend Langkilde and produced by Langkilde Møbler in Denmark during the 1960s. Crafted from richly grained Brazilian rosewood, the piece exhibits deep reddish-brown hues with darker veining, reflecting the high-quality materials favored during this period.
The design features four vertical sections, each subdivided into three compartments with open back panels. The recessed legs create a sculptural frame that enhances visual transparency, making it well suited for use as a room divider. The form is rectilinear and architectural, emphasizing clean lines and modular symmetry. Visible joinery and balanced proportions highlight Langkilde’s dedication to craftsmanship and functional elegance within the Danish modernist tradition.
Intended for both storage and display, the bookcase maintains a vertical rhythm and visual lightness despite the density of the rosewood. Langkilde Møbler was known for producing custom and small-series furniture emphasizing traditional cabinetmaking techniques and select materials. Svend Langkilde’s work is noted for restrained, functional designs grounded in material honesty and structural clarity.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition, showing only minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation. All compartments and surfaces retain their original finish and rich tonal depth.
The bookcase measures 116 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 140 cm in height, approximately 45.7 inches wide, 11.8 inches deep, and 55.1 inches high.
