Information

This very rare table lamp, model B-55, produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1970s, is a distinctive piece that reflects the subtle shift in Scandinavian modernism toward more architectural and reflective forms in the later mid-century period. Though the designer remains unidentified, the lamp’s composition reveals a clear influence from the minimal yet expressive design language of the time, balancing modern geometry with rich, tactile materials.

The structure is composed of a rectangular brass frame that forms the core visual and structural element of the lamp. The brass has developed a warm, natural patina that softens its reflective surface and enhances the visual depth of the piece. Set within this frame are mirrored glass panels, precisely inset on each side. These panels introduce a refined interplay of light and reflection, subtly amplifying the lamp’s surroundings while adding a sense of dimensional layering. The mirrored surfaces give the lamp an almost sculptural quality, echoing the era’s interest in material contrasts and transparency.

Atop the brass and glass body rests the original fabric lampshade, finished in a neutral, lightly textured fabric that complements the aged brass and lends a warm, diffuse light. The understated character of the shade supports the overall design philosophy—avoiding distraction and focusing attention on the clean geometry and material richness of the base.

The base is slightly elevated on small integrated feet, which lift the form just enough to lend a sense of lightness to what is otherwise a solid, grounded object. This detail enhances the lamp’s proportions, giving it a poised and thoughtfully considered silhouette. The overall composition is both decorative and functional, suited to interiors that emphasize clarity of form and quiet material expression.

Dimensions are 35.5 cm in width, 25.5 cm in depth, and 63 cm in height (approximately 14 x 10 x 24.8 inches), making it a substantial lamp ideal for placement on a console, sideboard, or large desk. The height and reflective surfaces allow it to engage with ambient lighting and surrounding furniture in a dynamic yet understated manner.

The underside of the lamp retains its original Bergboms sticker label, confirming authenticity. Bergboms, an important Swedish lighting manufacturer active during the mid-20th century, was known for its collaborations with notable Scandinavian designers and for producing lighting with meticulous attention to material detail and contemporary form.

In very good vintage condition, the brass shows minor surface wear and age-related patina, while the mirrored panels remain intact and clean. The lampshade is original and well-preserved, with only slight signs of aging.

Model B-55 is a rare and distinctive example of 1970s Scandinavian lighting—rooted in the minimalist ideals of earlier decades but exploring new material expressions. Its refined construction and enduring visual simplicity make it a collectible piece that bridges mid-century modernism and the architectural design tendencies of the late 20th century.
