Paavo Tynell table lamp

This unique table lamp was designed by Finnish lighting designer Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. Executed predominantly in brass, the lamp combines a restrained architectural structure with the delicate perforation and ornamental metalwork closely associated with Tynell’s post-war lighting. Tynell was a co-founder of Taito Oy and served as the company’s principal designer and managing director until 1953. By the late 1920s, lighting had become Taito’s principal field of production, and during the following decades the company developed into one of Finland’s most important manufacturers of architectural and domestic lighting.

The construction is organized around a tall, slender cylindrical brass stem rising from a shallow circular brass base. Above it sits a broad domed shade measuring 31 cm / 12.2 in in diameter. The shade has a gently rounded profile and terminates in an irregular, finely worked edge resembling a sequence of small teeth or droplets. Its lower section is pierced with repeated groups of three small circular perforations. When illuminated, these openings produce numerous concentrated points of light, while the open underside directs a warmer and broader pool of illumination downward. Perforated brass was an important feature of Tynell’s work, allowing the metal shade itself to participate in the distribution and decoration of light rather than functioning simply as an enclosure.

A particularly characteristic detail appears at the crown of the shade. A tapered brass fitting rises vertically from its center and is surrounded by a symmetrical arrangement of looping brass wire. The repeated oval loops create an abstract flower- or bow-like form, introducing an organic element into the otherwise geometrically controlled construction. This combination of simple circular forms, pierced metal and fine decorative wirework belongs to the more expressive vocabulary Tynell developed during the post-war period, when his lighting increasingly combined Scandinavian modernism with botanical and jewelry-like details.

The brass has developed a substantial natural patina, ranging from warm golden and ochre tones to darker brown, olive and areas of blue-green oxidation. Variations in color are particularly visible across the large shade and along the central stem, giving the surfaces considerable depth and recording the material’s age. The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of use consistent with its age, including surface marks, scratches, discoloration and oxidation. The brass stem forming the finial above the shade is slightly bent. These characteristics have been retained rather than polished away, preserving the aged surface of the brass.

The underside carries a Taito Oy manufacturer’s stamp as well as impressed inventory or production numerals, supporting the stated attribution to Taito Oy. The lamp has been rewired and is fully functioning. Its internal construction accommodates multiple light sources beneath the shade, producing both direct downward illumination and the characteristic pinpoints of light visible through the perforated brass.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) trained in metalwork at Helsinki’s Central School of Applied Arts before becoming one of the founders of Oy Taito Ab in 1918. His close understanding of sheet metal and decorative metalworking remained fundamental to his approach throughout his career. Taito collaborated extensively with Finnish architects, and Tynell designed lighting for important architectural projects while also developing lamps for domestic production. During the post-war period his work gained an international audience, particularly through Finland House in New York, where Taito lighting was introduced to the American market in 1948.

The lamp measures 45 cm / 17.7 in in overall height and 31 cm / 12.2 in in shade diameter. Its combination of a broad hemispherical shade, narrow vertical stem and low circular base creates a strongly balanced silhouette, while the perforations and wire finial soften the otherwise rigorous geometry. The result is representative of Tynell’s ability to treat artificial light, brass and handcrafted ornament as interconnected elements of a single object rather than separating decoration from function.
