Information

This rare laminated birch tray was designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Soinne et Kni in Finland during the 1950s. The object is characterized by its distinctly organic and asymmetric oval shape, with softly sloped edges and a low profile. The surface is adorned with a series of concentric ellipses created by the natural lamination of the birch, accentuating the tray’s handcrafted nature and the intrinsic beauty of the wood grain. The lamination process allows for the rhythmic repetition of linear wood layers, resulting in a graphic visual texture that simultaneously recalls growth rings and topographic contours.

The tray has a warm, golden-tan hue typical of Finnish birch, with slightly darker delineations that emphasize its curvature. It retains a natural matte finish, and shows signs of age and patina, including minor surface wear and subtle color variations, consistent with its vintage condition.

The underside bears a branded monogram—an overline atop the letter “W”—identifying Wirkkala’s authorship. Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was a leading figure in Finnish design and a central contributor to Scandinavian modernism. Known for his work across multiple materials, including glass, wood, ceramics, and metal, Wirkkala’s design ethos fused natural inspiration with formal experimentation. His wooden objects, in particular, display a deep respect for material tactility and precision.

Soinne et Kni, a Finnish manufacturer known for high-quality laminated woodwork, was among the few producers capable of executing Wirkkala’s complex and visually striking wooden designs during the post-war period.

This tray exemplifies the mid-century Scandinavian approach of harmonizing utility with artistry. Its scale and shape suggest use as a serving or display tray, though the sculptural quality of the laminated surface elevates it beyond strict functionality.

The dimensions are 37 cm wide, 19.5 cm deep, and 3.5 cm high, corresponding to approximately 14.6 inches in width, 7.7 inches in depth, and 1.4 inches in height.
