Tapio Wirkkala wall panels
These very rare wall panels were designed by Tapio Wirkkala and produced by Asko in Finland during the 1950s. They exemplify an experimental approach to marquetry and veneer inlay within the framework of Scandinavian modern design, combining functional interior elements with sculptural qualities. Each panel is part of a limited edition and is marked with a brass plaque indicating the designer, producer, and edition number, underscoring their collectible and artistic value.
Constructed primarily from birch, the panels showcase intricate laminated veneer patterns known as “Mussel” and “Leaf”. These organic motifs are achieved through Wirkkala’s innovative technique of using laminated wood sections cut crosswise to expose the natural linear growth rings of the wood. This method produces forms reminiscent of natural landscapes and biological structures, reflecting Wirkkala’s lifelong fascination with Finnish nature and his holistic design philosophy.
The surfaces feature flowing concentric contours in alternating warm tones of light and dark wood, creating visual depth and rhythmic texture. The central panel contains a darker wood field—likely walnut or stained birch—providing a contrasting focal point against the lighter inlay. The two flanking panels display more fluid, wave-like geometries that maintain a dynamic interplay when arranged as a group, illustrating Wirkkala’s sensitivity to spatial composition and movement.
Tapio Wirkkala was a seminal figure in Finnish post-war design, with a career spanning glass, ceramics, metalwork, and wood. His collaboration with Asko during the 1950s produced innovative furniture and interior design pieces that merged artisanal craftsmanship with industrial production methods, placing these panels firmly within that legacy.
The panels remain in very good original condition, with minimal surface wear and their original finish intact. All three bear Asko’s manufacturer plates and Wirkkala’s signature, along with the edition number 58/70. Each panel measures 62 cm in width, 3.5 cm in depth, and 124 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 24.4 inches wide, 1.4 inches deep, and 48.8 inches high.
