Thysen Nielsen chairs
This very rare chair was designed and produced by Danish cabinetmaker Thysen Nielsen in 2004. It exemplifies an experimental yet precisely crafted approach to modern seating, combining traditional woodworking with an innovative use of industrial materials. We currently have 4 pcs available.
The structure is constructed from solid cherry wood, which presents a warm, reddish-golden tone and a finely grained surface. The wood has aged gracefully, retaining a subtle sheen and uniform coloring. The frame is geometric and angular, with splayed, tapered legs that curve into pronounced and faceted footrests. The leg and stretcher joinery is executed with dovetail finger joints, showcasing the cabinetmaker’s skill and ensuring stability.
The most striking feature of the design is the seat and backrest, both composed of tightly strung transparent nylon cords. The cords run in parallel across the frame, creating a floating surface that appears visually light but structurally supportive. This technique not only reduces material usage but also enhances comfort through flexibility and breathability. The cords are secured through finely drilled channels and tensioned with remarkable precision.
From the side view, the profile reveals an inclined backrest with a gently curved top rail, optimizing ergonomic posture. The angled seat and structural cross rails further emphasize both the strength and the dynamic expression of the piece. The combination of open transparency and solid craftsmanship creates a strong sculptural contrast.
Thysen Nielsen operated within the Danish cabinetmaking tradition during a period of rich experimentation in form and material. While his name is less broadly documented than more commercially recognized designers, this chair reflects the high standards of artisanal Danish production in the postwar decades. Such pieces were typically made in limited quantities, often commissioned or shown in design exhibitions.
This chair is in excellent condition, with minor signs of age and a well-preserved finish. The nylon cord is clean and taut, without discoloration or slack, indicating a careful restoration or original upkeep. The cherry wood retains its warmth and clarity, with all structural joints intact.
The dimensions of the chair are 50 cm wide, 55 cm deep, and 91 cm high, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial units, that corresponds to 19.7 inches wide, 21.7 inches deep, 35.8 inches high, and a seat height of 17.7 inches. It is a rare and technically sophisticated example of Danish modern furniture, blending craftsmanship with modernist innovation.
