Information

This ceiling lamp was designed by Torsten Orrling and Hans-Agne Jakobsson in the 1950s and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. The lamp is composed of brass-coated aluminum, with a vertically oriented, cylindrical core at its center. Surrounding this core are curved, overlapping metal bands arranged in a tiered, symmetrical manner. These bands create a sculptural, layered form that allows light to be diffused both upward and downward, while also concealing the light source, which is a signature feature of Jakobsson’s designs aimed at achieving glare-free illumination.

The brass coating has developed a warm patina over time, with subtle tonal variations and light signs of wear that are typical of its age. The surface maintains a semi-gloss sheen, contributing to the reflective properties of the material. When illuminated, the lamp casts a soft, ambient glow, with distinct shadows and highlights created by the stepped, ribbon-like metal bands.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a leading Swedish lighting designer, recognized for his innovative approach to form and material. His collaboration with architect Torsten Orrling led to several significant lighting designs that balanced the precise lines of modernism with a softer, more atmospheric quality of light. Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, based in Markaryd, Sweden, was known for its precision in metalworking and experimental approach to form, becoming a key player in the Scandinavian lighting design movement during the mid-20th century.

This lamp reflects the core values of mid-century Scandinavian design: functional elegance, minimal ornamentation, and a thoughtful use of industrial materials. Its sculptural form, combined with its efficient and understated design, is a perfect example of Jakobsson’s design philosophy.

The lamp measures 24 cm in diameter and 60 cm in height (approximately 9.4 inches in diameter and 23.6 inches in height). It is in very good vintage condition, with only minor signs of wear typical for its age and materials.
