Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was among Sweden’s most influential lighting designers of the post-war period. After working for General Motors and later for Carl Malmsten as an architect, he founded Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd in 1951. His work became internationally recognized for its focus on creating soft, glare-free illumination through innovative use of natural and translucent materials, including fabric, veneer, brass, and glass. Jakobsson’s lighting designs are characterized by their understated Scandinavian forms and exceptional understanding of atmosphere, making them enduring icons of mid-century Swedish design.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB established itself as one of Sweden’s leading lighting manufacturers during the 1950s and 1960s. Production emphasized high-quality craftsmanship and carefully engineered lighting solutions that balanced functionality with decorative refinement. Original lamps retaining their factory-produced shades are considerably less common, as the delicate textile shades were often replaced during their lifetime.

The lamp features a circular trumpet-shaped brass base that transitions into a cylindrical stem with clean, uninterrupted lines. The original dome-shaped shade is constructed from white fabric stretched over an internal metal frame, creating evenly spaced vertical ribs across the surface. An open aperture at the top allows heat dissipation while contributing to the lamp’s characteristic indirect light distribution. When illuminated, the fabric emits a warm, diffused glow that highlights the subtle texture of the textile and reinforces the atmospheric lighting qualities for which Jakobsson’s work is renowned.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The brass surfaces display an attractive natural patina with minor surface marks, oxidation, and tonal variation developed over time. The original fabric shade shows light wear, gentle discoloration, and small marks associated with age and use, while remaining structurally sound and retaining its original form.
