Uno Kristiansson floor lamp
Rare floor lamp designed by Uno Kristiansson and produced by Luxus in Vittsjö, Sweden. Executed in pine with a brass detail and pleated fabric shade, the lamp belongs to the rustic strand of Swedish modern design associated with sportstugemöbler—furniture conceived for country houses, cabins and informal interiors.
The construction is unusually expressive. A tall, slender pine post rises from a broad circular base and supports a horizontal wooden arm near the top. The arm passes through the upright and terminates in a turned spherical element, while the lamp holder is suspended from the opposite end. A second turned wooden sphere beneath the light fitting repeats this motif and gives the composition a playful, almost anthropomorphic character.
Kristiansson makes the construction itself the principal decorative element. Cylinders, spheres and simple intersecting members create a clear geometric composition, yet the prominent grain and warm tone of the pine soften its architectural quality. The large circular base is particularly attractive, displaying pronounced concentric patterns in the timber. A darkened brass ring at the junction between the upright and base provides a small but distinctive material contrast.
The cream-colored pleated shade balances the robust wooden framework with a lighter, more delicate volume. Its traditional form is deliberately contrasted with the exposed timber construction below. When illuminated, the closely spaced pleats diffuse the light into a warm amber glow and produce a particularly atmospheric light characteristic of Scandinavian interiors.
The lamp reflects an important aspect of Swedish post-war design in which modernist simplicity was combined with vernacular materials and references to rural furniture. Rather than the polished sophistication associated with more metropolitan Scandinavian modernism, sportstugemöbler embraced pine, visible joinery and sturdy construction, creating furniture suited to relaxed domestic environments. Here, those qualities are translated into an unusually sculptural lighting design.
Uno Kristiansson, together with his brother Östen Kristiansson, was closely associated with the family company Luxus in Vittsjö. The firm’s lighting and furniture became known for combining carefully worked timber with understated modern forms. This example retains the manufacturer’s stamp, “MADE IN SWEDEN LUXUS” on the wooden lamp fitting.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with signs of use and a developed patina consistent with its age. The timber shows natural variations, surface wear and mellowing of the finish, while the brass ring has acquired darker oxidation. The pleated shade shows some age-related wear and small marks visible on close inspection. These characteristics contribute to the authentic appearance of the piece rather than detracting from its strong sculptural presence.
The shade measures approximately 36.5 cm (14.4 in) in diameter, and the lamp has a total height of approximately 150 cm (59.1 in).
