Verner Panton easy chairs
This is a pair of easy chairs with a matching stool, model Bachelor, designed by Verner Panton and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark during the 1950s. The pieces reflect Panton’s early exploration of minimalist furniture design, combining industrial materials with a focus on comfort and simplicity. The set consists of two lounge chairs and one stool, each constructed from tubular steel frames with seats and backrests in original suede leather.
The chairs and stool are built on slender steel frames bent into continuous flowing forms. The armrests and legs are crafted from the same tubular steel, creating a lightweight yet stable structure. The seats are made from natural suede leather in a warm brown tone, which has developed a rich patina over time. The suede surfaces show wear consistent with age, including discoloration, small stains, and visible damages along seams, adding to the character of the set and evidencing decades of use.
Verner Panton (1926–1998) was a Danish architect and designer celebrated for his bold use of form, color, and unconventional materials. While later known for his experimental use of plastics and vibrant color schemes, Panton’s early work, such as the Bachelor chair, demonstrates his interest in functional and pared-down furniture that emphasized structural clarity. The Bachelor series was designed to be easily disassembled and transported, aligning with the modernist ideal of practical, democratic furniture.
The producer, Fritz Hansen, is one of Denmark’s most important furniture manufacturers, established in 1872 and responsible for producing many of the icons of Scandinavian modern design. Their collaboration with Verner Panton resulted in several innovative designs that bridged the gap between tradition and radical experimentation. The Bachelor chair and stool remain emblematic of the mid-century Scandinavian approach to furniture: simple, functional, and aesthetically refined.
This set is in good vintage condition with patina, wear, and damages to seams visible on the suede, consistent with age and use. The steel frames retain their original finish with light surface marks.
