Verner Panton easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model ‘System 1-2-3’, was designed by Verner Panton in 1973 and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. The chairs illustrate Panton’s innovative approach to organic form and material use, blending Scandinavian mid-century modern principles with a futuristic aesthetic that was characteristic of his work in the early 1970s.
The chairs are fully upholstered in deep brown tufted leather, which provides a rich, tactile surface. The upholstery features a distinctive deep buttoning arranged in a scaled pattern, reflecting Panton’s interest in geometric texture. The leather is expertly tailored and remains in excellent condition, showing only minor wear consistent with careful use and age. The patina on the leather enhances the depth and complexity of the brown color without detracting from the material’s durability.
Structurally, the chairs embody a continuous, sinuous curve that integrates the seat, backrest, and base into one sculptural form. The ergonomic S-shaped profile is supported by four spherical wooden feet, which slightly elevate the piece while maintaining a low lounge posture. The internal support frame is concealed beneath the sculpted leather shell, reinforcing the monolithic and fluid appearance of the chairs.
Verner Panton (1926–1998) was a key figure in post-war design, celebrated for his bold use of shape, color, and new materials. The ‘System 1-2-3’ series, introduced in the early 1970s, was conceived as a modular system allowing various configurations and bases. This particular pair represents the rare fully upholstered variant without a swivel base, emphasizing the sculptural and aesthetic impact of the model.
Fritz Hansen, founded in 1872, is one of Denmark’s most prestigious furniture manufacturers, known for collaborations with designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm. Their production of the ‘System 1-2-3’ series highlights a dedication to advanced industrial craftsmanship and innovative design.
Each chair measures approximately 60 cm in width, 90 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height, with a seat height of 33 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to about 23.6 inches wide, 35.4 inches deep, 28 inches high, and a seat height of 13 inches. These dimensions, combined with the flowing form and leather upholstery, position the chairs as functional seating and sculptural design objects.
