Vicke Lindstrand vase
This sculptural hand-blown glass vase, designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta glassworks in Sweden during the 1960s, reflects the technical sophistication and artistic ambition characteristic of Lindstrand’s mature period. The base is inscribed “Kosta LH 1803,” denoting Lindstrand’s authorship and the vase’s production number within Kosta’s cataloguing system.
Executed in clear crystal glass, the vase contains an internal composition of green glass filaments and controlled air bubbles, suspended within the thick-walled transparent structure. These embedded decorative elements evoke organic or botanical imagery—resembling underwater vegetation or fine, drifting tendrils—rendered with a precision that speaks to both technical control and artistic intent. The contrast between the stillness of the outer form and the liveliness of the internal composition gives the piece an engaging visual tension.
The vessel is vertically oriented, with a tapering elliptical body that narrows gently toward a small, rounded mouth. The glass is thick and optically pure, with deeply polished surfaces that emphasize internal depth and light refraction. The form is both minimal and dynamic, encouraging the viewer to examine the interior from multiple angles as light and perspective shift across the contours.
Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a key figure in Swedish glass design, instrumental in shaping the postwar identity of both Orrefors and, later, Kosta. After joining Kosta in 1950 as artistic director, he steered the company toward more sculptural and technically ambitious works. He was particularly adept at integrating internal decoration into blown glass, exploring submerged forms, filaments, and air inclusions with great subtlety. These pieces were often executed as one-off or limited series works and are now prized for their originality and craftsmanship.
Kosta, founded in 1742, is the oldest glassworks in Sweden and was a major contributor to the global reputation of Swedish glass in the 20th century. Under Lindstrand’s direction, Kosta embraced new aesthetic directions, producing works that combined traditional techniques with a distinctly modernist sensibility.
The condition of the vase is very good. There are no chips, cracks, or structural damage. The glass remains clear, with only minor surface wear at the base, consistent with age and careful handling.
