Vicke Lindstrand vases
This pair of glass objects consists of a sculptural vase and a small bowl, both designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1950s. Each piece is crafted from thick clear glass, encasing bold internal layers of color that range from smoky brown to deep red tones. The larger vase presents a soft, rounded form with an asymmetrical mouth and an interior lens-like cavity, revealing the nuanced interplay of color and transparency. The smaller bowl features a similarly thick-walled construction with an elliptical opening and internal layers of red and grey, creating a dynamic visual depth.
Both pieces are in excellent condition, retaining their original polish and clarity. The surfaces show minimal wear, with only minor signs of age visible under close inspection. The bases of the items bear the engraved signatures and production codes typical of Kosta Glasbruk’s mid-century art glass, confirming their authenticity and providing traceability to their period of manufacture.
Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was one of Sweden’s most influential glass designers and a pioneer of Swedish modernist glass art. His work is characterized by innovative use of color, bold sculptural forms, and technical experimentation with glassblowing and layering techniques. After his formative years at Orrefors, Lindstrand moved to Kosta Glasbruk in 1950, where he continued to develop his signature style, producing expressive art glass pieces that blended artistry with craftsmanship.
Kosta Glasbruk, founded in 1742 in Småland, Sweden, is one of the oldest glassworks in Sweden. During the 1950s, Kosta became a center for modernist glass art under the artistic direction of designers such as Lindstrand. The glassworks is renowned for its innovative production techniques and collaborations with leading Swedish designers, resulting in pieces that are both functional and artistic.
