Information

This mid-century cylindrical glass vase, designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta glassworks in Sweden during the 1960s, exemplifies Lindstrand’s refined approach to form, color, and optical clarity. The piece is signed “Kosta LH 1889” on the base, with the “LH” indicating Lindstrand’s authorship within Kosta’s internal production cataloguing system.

The vase is executed using the sommerso technique, in which colored glass is submerged within a thick outer layer of clear crystal. Here, a central core of golden amber glass forms the primary internal element, gradually shifting in tone as it ascends toward the upper portion of the vessel. Subtle hints of green and blue coloration are visible near the rim, contributing to the overall sense of depth and tonal complexity. The transitions are fluid and visually immersive, with the clear outer casing functioning both as a magnifier and refractive surface that enriches the layered appearance.

The shape is vertically oriented and cylindrical, with clean lines and a restrained silhouette. The softly rounded rim complements the clarity and balance of the overall composition. At the base, a single controlled air bubble is suspended within the clear glass, intentionally incorporated as a formal detail. This type of inclusion was characteristic of Scandinavian studio glass in the mid-century period and appears frequently in Lindstrand’s work, functioning as a point of focus within the otherwise transparent volume.

Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a pivotal figure in the development of 20th-century Scandinavian art glass. Following his formative years at Orrefors, where he helped advance engraved and color-layered techniques, Lindstrand took on the role of artistic director at Kosta in 1950. During his two decades at the helm, he pioneered the use of internal coloration, air inclusions, and sculptural forms in blown glass, establishing Kosta as a leader in modernist glassmaking. His work is characterized by precise proportioning, innovative use of color, and a consistent interest in the interaction between interior and exterior space.

Kosta, founded in 1742, is the oldest glassworks in Sweden and became a global reference point for high-quality art glass in the postwar era. Lindstrand’s influence during his tenure helped transition the company toward expressive, studio-like production while maintaining the traditional technical standards of Swedish glass.

This vase is in very good vintage condition. It shows light surface wear to the base, consistent with age and display, but is free of chips, cracks, or structural flaws. The clarity of the glass is well preserved, and the interior color remains vibrant.

Dimensions: 23 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter (approximately 9.06 × 2.36 inches). The piece stands as a subtle yet sophisticated example of Lindstrand’s sommerso work at Kosta, balancing technical mastery with a restrained and contemplative modernist aesthetic.
