Vicke Lindstrand vase

This sculptural glass vase, model 1828, was designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1960s. Executed in the sommerso technique, the form reveals a rich cobalt-blue inner core perfectly encased within a thick, clear outer layer of crystal glass. The deep, saturated color of the inner volume appears to float, while the polished, heavy walls capture and refract light, creating a captivating play of depth and luminosity.

The vase adopts an elongated, tapering oval silhouette with softly rounded shoulders that converge into a narrow, flat-cut rim. Its graceful vertical profile emphasizes both the purity of its silhouette and the optical clarity of its construction. The contrast between the vivid blue interior and the pristine transparency of the exterior lends the piece a fluid yet architectonic presence.

Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was among the foremost figures in Swedish modernist glass design. After significant contributions at Orrefors, he joined Kosta in 1950 as artistic director, steering the company toward bolder forms, sophisticated color layering, and technical innovation. His mastery of internal coloration and seamless integration of art glass techniques defined Kosta’s mid-century identity and influenced the broader trajectory of Scandinavian studio glass.

Kosta Glasbruk, founded in 1742, rose to international prominence under Lindstrand’s leadership, balancing centuries-old craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. The engraved signature “Kosta 1828 VL” on the base confirms both the piece’s production number and Lindstrand’s authorship.

Measuring 9.5 cm in width, 6.5 cm in depth, and 26 cm in height (approximately 3.7 × 2.6 × 10.2 inches), this vase remains in very good vintage condition. It shows only light surface wear and faint scratches consistent with careful use, preserving its optical brilliance and sculptural integrity.
