Vicke Lindstrand vase
This glass vase was designed by Vicke Lindstrand and produced by Kosta Glasbruk in Sweden during the 1960s. It is signed “LH 1446 Kosta” confirming its authenticity and its place within Kosta’s mid-century glass production. The vase is created using the Sommerso technique, where a rich amber-brown core is encased within a thick layer of clear glass, producing a visually striking depth and contrast.
The vase has a tall, cylindrical form that tapers gently toward the top, ending with a softly curved rim. The smooth, polished surface accentuates the optical effect of the layered color, emphasizing the elongated silhouette. This design exemplifies Lindstrand’s refined approach, combining minimalism with technical mastery to achieve an elegant and timeless aesthetic.
Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983) was a leading figure in Swedish glass design, beginning his career at Orrefors before joining Kosta in 1950. His work at Kosta is celebrated for sculptural forms, subtle color gradations, and expert glassblowing techniques. Lindstrand played a pivotal role in shaping modern Scandinavian glass design, influencing both artistic and functional glassware.
Kosta Glasbruk, founded in 1742, is Sweden’s oldest operating glassworks and gained international acclaim in the mid-20th century for its superior glass production. Under designers like Lindstrand, Kosta developed a distinctive style that balanced innovation with traditional craftsmanship.
The vase remains in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear. Its dimensions are 9 centimeters in width, 6 centimeters in depth, and 28 centimeters in height (approximately 3.5 x 2.4 x 11 inches), making it a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian glass design.
